“Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you.”
There's a strange thing that happens with the people we live with. The more constant they are, the less we see them.
You notice a guest in your house. You don't notice the walls. And after enough years, a faithful spouse can start to feel like the walls. Always there, holding things up, completely unremarked on.
That isn't cruelty. It's just how attention works. We notice what changes. But it means the person doing the most steady, unglamorous work in your life may be the person who gets thanked the least.
Paul says to give thanks in everything. Not just the big rescues, the raises, and the good news. Everything. The ordinary, repeated, unexciting faithfulness that holds a life together.
So think about it plainly. Someone goes to work for this family. Someone handles what nobody else wants to handle. Someone shows up again the next day even when they're tired of it. Those are not small things just because they happen every day.
Gratitude has to be spoken to do its work. Feeling thankful and never saying it is like writing a letter you never mail. Your spouse cannot read your mind, and after years of silence they may honestly wonder if you noticed at all.
The other side of this is worth naming too. If you feel taken for granted, say so gently rather than storing it up. Resentment is often just unspoken need with time added.
Today, say the thing out loud. Not a general compliment. The actual thing they do that you have quietly relied on for years.
Talk About It Together
This one is about saying things you may have felt for years but never said plainly. Go slow.
- What is something you do for this family that you're not sure I notice?
- What do I do that you're genuinely grateful for?
- When was the last time you felt truly appreciated by me?
- Is there something you've been carrying alone that you'd like help with?
- What is one thing about our life together right now that you're thankful for?
Tonight’s Challenge
Thank your spouse out loud tonight for something they have done faithfully for years. Name the specific thing and tell them what it has meant to you.
Prayer
Father, thank You for a person who shows up in our life every day. Forgive us for the times we've stopped seeing each other. Open our eyes to the ordinary faithfulness in this house and give us the words to say thank you out loud. Make gratitude a habit in our marriage and not a special occasion. Amen.
