What This Book Is

A sustained argument that Christ is better than the angels, Moses, the priesthood, and the sacrifices, written to people tempted to go back.

Overview

Hebrews does not open like a letter. There is no greeting and no named sender, and it reads more like a sermon that was written down, ending with a few personal notes.

Its argument is cumulative and uses one word repeatedly: better. God spoke through prophets, but now through a Son. Christ is better than angels, than Moses, than Joshua, than Aaron's priesthood. His covenant is better, his sacrifice better, and his once for all offering makes the repeated ones unnecessary.

The author is writing to people who are drifting, and every stretch of argument is interrupted by a warning. Pay closer attention, lest we drift away. Take care that none of you has an unbelieving heart. Do not neglect meeting together. Some of those warning passages are among the most difficult in the New Testament, and Christian traditions have long read them differently. It is fair to say the tension in them has never been fully resolved by any reading.

Chapter 11 lifts the tone. It runs through the Old Testament figures who lived by faith, and it is honest that many of them did not see what they were promised. Some conquered kingdoms; others were sawn in two. Both lists are in the same chapter.

Chapter 12 turns that into an image: a great cloud of witnesses in the stands, weights laid aside, a race run with endurance, and eyes fixed on Jesus.

The closing chapter is short, practical instruction: hospitality, remembering prisoners, honouring marriage, contentment, and doing good.

Why It Matters

Hebrews is the New Testament's fullest explanation of what Jesus accomplished in terms drawn from the Old Testament sacrificial system, which is why it is nearly impossible to read well without Leviticus somewhere in view. Its picture of Jesus as a high priest who sympathises with our weakness because he was tempted in every way is one of the most comforting in Scripture. And its central pastoral concern, drifting rather than rejecting, describes how most people actually lose their faith.

How to Read It

• Read Leviticus, or at least Leviticus 16, before or alongside this book.
• Notice the warnings interrupting the argument, and read them as pastoral rather than abstract.
• Read chapter 11 and count how many entries end without the promise received.
• Read 4:14-16 when you assume God cannot understand what you are going through.
