After Queen Vashti was deposed, the Persian king chose Esther, a Jewish woman raised by her cousin Mordecai, as his new queen, though she kept her heritage secret. When Mordecai refused to bow to the proud official Haman, Haman plotted to destroy not only Mordecai but all the Jews throughout the empire, casting lots to set a date and persuading the king to issue an irreversible decree of annihilation. Mordecai urged Esther to plead with the king, telling her that she might have come to her royal position for such a time as this. Esther asked the Jews to fast with her, then resolved to approach the king uninvited, saying that if she perished, she perished. She won the king's favor and, at a banquet, exposed Haman's plot and revealed her own Jewish identity. The enraged king had Haman executed on the very gallows he had built for Mordecai. Since the original decree could not be revoked, the king issued a new one allowing the Jews to defend themselves. They were delivered, and the festival of Purim was established to commemorate their rescue.
