After she followed them for many days, Paul commanded the spirit to leave her, and it did. Her owners, angry at their lost profits, dragged Paul and Silas before the authorities, who had them stripped, beaten, and thrown into prison, with their feet fastened in stocks. About midnight, rather than despairing, Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening. Suddenly a violent earthquake shook the prison, the doors flew open, and everyone's chains came loose. The jailer, waking to see the doors open, assumed the prisoners had escaped and drew his sword to kill himself, since he would be held responsible. But Paul shouted for him not to harm himself, for they were all still there. Trembling, the jailer fell before Paul and Silas and asked what he must do to be saved.
