Story Summary

Noticing how the guests picked the places of honor at the table, Jesus told them a parable. When you are invited to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a more distinguished guest may have been invited. Then the host will come and say, Give this person your seat, and you will be humiliated, taking the lowest place. Instead, when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that your host may come and say, Friend, move up higher. Then you will be honored in the presence of the other guests. For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted. Then Jesus turned to his host: When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your relatives, or your rich neighbors, who may invite you back and so repay you. Instead, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. Then you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you; you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.
