Story Summary

Early in his reign, Solomon went to Gibeon to offer sacrifices, and there God appeared to him in a dream, inviting him to ask for whatever he wished. Solomon responded with humility, acknowledging God's great kindness to his father David and confessing that he felt like a child, unsure how to lead the vast people God had given him. Rather than asking for long life, riches, or the death of his enemies, Solomon asked for an understanding heart to discern between good and evil and to govern God's people justly. God was pleased that Solomon had not asked for selfish things and granted him a wise and discerning heart unlike any before or after, and also gave him what he had not asked, riches and honor. Solomon's wisdom was soon tested when two women came before him, each claiming to be the mother of a living child. Solomon ordered the child divided in two, and the true mother, moved by love, begged that the child be spared and given to the other woman. By this Solomon discerned the real mother, and all Israel stood in awe of the wisdom God had given him.
