Every year Jesus' parents went to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover. When Jesus was twelve, they went up as usual, but after the festival, as His parents returned home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem without their knowledge. Assuming He was among their travel companions, they journeyed a day before realizing He was missing, then returned to Jerusalem to search for Him. After three days they found Him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking questions. Everyone who heard Him was amazed at His understanding and His answers. When His parents saw Him, they were astonished, and His mother asked why He had treated them this way, explaining that she and His father had been anxiously searching for Him. Jesus replied, asking why they had been searching, and whether they did not know that He had to be in His Father's house, or about His Father's business. They did not fully understand what He meant. Jesus went back with them to Nazareth and was obedient to them, and Mary treasured all these things in her heart. Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and people.
