Moses was shepherding the flock of his father-in-law near Horeb, the mountain of God, when he saw a bush that burned without being consumed. As he turned to look, God called to him from the bush by name, telling him to remove his sandals, for the ground was holy. God identified Himself as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and Moses hid his face. God said He had seen the misery of His people in Egypt and had come to deliver them into a good land, and He was sending Moses to Pharaoh to bring Israel out. Moses objected that he was inadequate, and God promised to be with him. When Moses asked God's name, God answered, I AM WHO I AM, and told him to say that I AM had sent him. God foretold that Pharaoh would resist but that His mighty acts would compel him. Moses raised further objections, that the people would not believe him, that he was not eloquent, and God gave him signs and appointed Aaron to speak for him. Though Moses pleaded to be excused, God sent him.
