Jesus told a crowd about a farmer who went out to sow. As he scattered the seed, some fell along the path, and birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places without much soil; it sprang up quickly but was scorched and withered when the sun rose, because it had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop, a hundred, sixty, or thirty times what was sown. When the disciples asked why he spoke in parables, Jesus explained the meaning. The seed is the word of the kingdom. The path is the one who hears but does not understand, and the evil one snatches the word away. The rocky ground is the one who receives the word with joy but has no root, and falls away when trouble or persecution comes. The thorns are the one who hears, but the worries of life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful. The good soil is the one who hears the word and understands it, and produces a rich harvest.

What This Story Means

This is the parable Jesus said was the key to all the others, and it is about hearing. The seed is the same in every case; the difference is entirely in the soil. Some hearts are hardened like a footpath, and the word never penetrates. Some are shallow, receiving the word with quick enthusiasm that has no root to survive hardship. Some are crowded, where the cares and pleasures of life grow up and strangle the word before it can bear fruit. Only the good soil, the heart that hears, understands, and holds on, produces a harvest. Jesus is not describing four kinds of people so much as warning every hearer to ask what kind of ground they are. The call is not merely to hear the word but to let it take root and endure.
