Three months after leaving Egypt, Israel camped at the foot of Mount Sinai. God called Moses up and declared that if the people obeyed His voice and kept His covenant, they would be His treasured possession, a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. The people agreed to do all the LORD had spoken. God descended on the mountain in fire, smoke, thunder, and a loud trumpet blast, and the mountain trembled, for the people were not to approach the holy presence. Then God spoke the Ten Commandments: to have no other gods before Him; to make no idols; not to misuse His name; to remember the Sabbath and keep it holy; to honor father and mother; not to murder; not to commit adultery; not to steal; not to give false testimony; and not to covet. The people, terrified by the thunder and lightning, stood at a distance and asked Moses to speak with God on their behalf. Moses drew near to the thick darkness where God was, and Israel was bound to God in covenant.
