Story Summary

Traveling through Samaria, Jesus stopped, tired, at a well near the town of Sychar around noon, while His disciples went to buy food. A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus asked her for a drink. She was surprised, since Jews normally had no dealings with Samaritans, and men did not usually speak with women in that way. Jesus told her that if she knew who was asking, she would have asked Him for living water, which would become in her a spring welling up to eternal life. When she asked for this water, Jesus gently revealed that He knew about her life, including that she had had five husbands and was now with a man who was not her husband. Recognizing Him as a prophet, she raised the question of where to worship, and Jesus taught that true worshipers would worship the Father in spirit and truth. When she spoke of the coming Messiah, Jesus declared that He was the one. The woman left her water jar, went back to town, and told the people, many of whom came to see Jesus. They believed because of her testimony and, after Jesus stayed with them, because of His own words, confessing Him as the Savior of the world.
