“When your days are fulfilled, and you sleep with your fathers, I will set up your offspring after you, who will proceed out of your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He will build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. ... Your house and your kingdom will be made sure forever before you. Your throne will be established forever.”
David wanted to build God a house. God's answer was essentially, you have that backwards. I am going to build you one.
Then comes the promise, and the word that keeps repeating in it is forever. Not for a long while. Not as long as your family behaves. Forever.
David heard that as a father hears a promise about his children. What he could not have known is how long the thread would run. A thousand years later, an angel would tell a young woman in a small town that her son would be given the throne of his father David. A thousand years is a long time to hold a promise open.
That gap is worth sitting with, because we tend to lose our nerve after about a week. We pray about something in March and by June we have decided the silence was the answer. God works on a scale that does not fit inside our patience.
It is also worth noticing that the family in between was a mess. The line running from David to Bethlehem includes adulterers, cowards, and outright failures. God did not keep the promise because the family earned it. He kept it because he made it.
That is the only reason any of us has hope, honestly. Not because we have been reliable, but because he has. The promise did not depend on David's descendants being good men. It depended on God being a God who does what he says.
What he says, he does. It may take longer than a lifetime. It gets done.

Prayer
God, You keep promises across generations while we lose heart in a season. Forgive our short memory and our shorter patience. Thank You that Your word does not depend on how well we have done. Hold us steady in the waiting, and remind us that You finish what You start. Amen.
