“Of the increase of his government and of peace there shall be no end, on David's throne, and on his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from that time on, even forever. The zeal of Yahweh of Armies will perform this.”
Every kingdom you have ever heard of has ended or is ending. That is the pattern. A nation rises, holds power for a while, overreaches, and falls. Read enough history and you can see it coming a mile off.
Isaiah says this one increases and never ends.
And notice what it increases in. Not territory. Government and peace, together, growing side by side, held up by justice and righteousness. In our experience those things trade against each other. More order usually means less freedom. More power usually means less justice. Here they grow together without limit, which means we are being told about a kind of rule nobody has ever actually seen.
It is a good corrective for anyone who gets their sense of hope from the news. We put enormous weight on who holds office, and then we are bitterly disappointed, over and over, no matter which side wins. Human government is genuinely important and it is also permanently unable to carry what we keep asking it to carry.
Then there is the last line, and it is the whole reason to believe any of this. The zeal of Yahweh of Armies will perform this. Not our effort. Not a movement. God's own determination will get it done.
So we can work for justice where we are without pinning our hope on the results, and we can lose an argument or an election without losing our footing. The government that lasts is on shoulders that will not buckle.

Lord, we keep asking things that always fail to hold us up. Forgive us for putting our hope where it does not belong. Thank You that Your kingdom grows in justice and peace and never ends. Give us steady hearts, useful hands, and hope that does not rise and fall with the headlines. Amen.
