“But to you who fear my name shall the sun of righteousness arise with healing in its wings. You will go out, and leap like calves of the stall.”
This is nearly the last thing God says in the Old Testament. After it, the page turns and there is nothing for about four hundred years.
Think about that stretch. Four centuries with no prophet, no new word, no sign. Generations were born, lived their whole lives, and died inside that silence. A grandfather could tell his grandson the old promises and the boy could reasonably ask whether anyone was still listening.
So the last word matters. The sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings.
He does not say a lamp will be lit. The sun rises. You cannot argue with a sunrise or negotiate with it. It is not gentle or subtle. It simply comes and there is no more dark.
And then the strangest, best image in the verse. You will go out and leap like calves of the stall. Anyone who has seen animals let out into a field after a long winter knows exactly what that is. It is not dignified. It is pure released joy, all four feet off the ground.
That is what God says is on the other side of the silence.
Most of us know a version of this waiting. You have prayed about something for years and heaven has felt like a closed door. Malachi is honest that the silence can be long. He is also clear that it is not the end of the sentence. The silence broke. An angel spoke to an old priest in the temple, and the four hundred years were over.
Silence is not the same as absence.
Talk About It Together
Be honest about the silence. Do not paper over it.
- Where has God felt silent to you?
- What helps you keep believing during a stretch with no clear answer?
- What would healing look like in the area you have been waiting on longest?
Tonight’s Challenge
Tell one person about a time God came through for you. Say it out loud to strengthen someone still waiting.
Prayer
God, the silence is hard and we do not always handle it well. Thank You that Your silence has never meant You were gone. Rise on us like the sun with healing. Give us joy again, the kind we cannot hold in, and hold us steady until it comes. Amen.
