“While they were there, the day had come for her to give birth. She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a feeding trough, because there was no room for them in the inn.”
Two verses. That is all Luke gives to the moment the world had been waiting for. No fanfare, no description of the night. Just a birth, some cloth, a feeding trough, and a sentence about there being no room.
Think about the trough for a second. It is where animals eat. It would have smelled like animals. The King of everything is laid in the feed bin because it was the flattest surface available.
It is easy to be angry at whoever turned them away, but the innkeeper is not really the villain here. The town was overwhelmed. Everyone had come for the census. There genuinely was no space, and nobody knew who was standing at the door.
That is usually how it happens. Not a decision to shut God out. Just a full house. No space left over.
Which lands uncomfortably close in the last week before Christmas. This is the stretch where the calendar fills, the list gets longer, and everything runs late. It is entirely possible to spend the whole month preparing for Christmas and never once make room for Christ. That is not hypocrisy. It is just a full inn.
So the question this week is not whether you believe. It is whether there is any space. Fifteen quiet minutes. One conversation that is not logistics. A door left open for someone who has nowhere to be.
He came anyway that night. He came into the space that was left, which was almost none. He is not too proud to come into whatever room you have.
