Glory in the Highest

One angel was already more than the shepherds could handle. Then the whole sky fills up.

Luke calls it a multitude of the heavenly army. Not a choir in the way we picture it. An army, praising. Whatever had been held back for centuries came out all at once over a field full of sheep.

And then it stopped, and it was an ordinary night again, dark and cold, with the sheep still there.

Think about what those men carried for the rest of their lives. They would go back to the same work the next week. Nobody who had not been in that field would ever fully believe them. But they had seen it, and no one could take it back.

Most of us get a few moments like that. Not angels, but something. A night you knew God was real. A prayer answered so precisely you could not explain it away. A moment of peace that arrived from somewhere outside you. And then life resumes, ordinary and demanding, and after a while you can start to wonder if you imagined it.

You did not. Remember it on purpose. Faith over the long haul is largely the work of not forgetting.

And hear what the army actually said, because it is a summary of the whole thing. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace. That is the shape of Christmas. Heaven gets the glory. Earth gets the peace. It came down to a cold field where working men were doing a night shift, and it has been coming down ever since.
