Mary Treasured These Things

Everyone else in the scene is moving. The shepherds arrive in a rush and leave telling everybody. The town is buzzing. Luke gives one quiet verse to Mary, and it is the stillest sentence in the chapter.

She kept all these things and pondered them in her heart.

She had every reason to be overwhelmed. She had just given birth in a strange town, far from her mother and whatever help she would have had at home. Now shepherds are telling her about angels. She does not analyze it or explain it. She holds it.

That word pondered suggests turning something over slowly, the way you might work a stone in your hand. She was not trying to reach a conclusion. She was letting it settle.

This is Christmas Eve, which in most houses is the least still day of the year. Wrapping, cooking, travel, the last errand, small people who will not sleep. Tomorrow will go fast, and by the evening it will be over and half of it will be a blur.

So take Mary's verse as permission, or as instruction. Somewhere today, stop. Ten minutes. Look at the people in your house and let it register that they are yours and you are theirs. Notice what God has already done this year, including the parts that were hard.

The rushing is not wrong. The shepherds were right to hurry. But somebody in the story stayed still and paid attention, and hers is the account we still have. What is treasured is what gets kept.
