Day 2Anxiety & Peace

God Is Not Ashamed of Your Fear

1 Kings 19:3-5, 7

When he saw that, he arose, and ran for his life, and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there. But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree. Then he requested for himself that he might die, and said, "It is enough. Now, O Yahweh, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers." He lay down and slept under a juniper tree; and behold, an angel touched him, and said to him, "Arise and eat!" ... Yahweh's angel came again the second time, and touched him, and said, "Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you."

World English Bible

Elijah had just seen God answer with fire in front of the whole nation. It was the high point of his ministry. Days later he is running for his life, sitting alone under a tree, telling God he has had enough.

So let us put one idea down right now. A person can have real faith and still end up under the juniper tree. Spiritual highs do not make you immune. Elijah is proof, and he is one of the great prophets.

Watch what God does with him, because it is not what we would expect. No lecture. No reminder of the miracle he just performed. No question about why he is not trusting more.

An angel lets him sleep. Then wakes him and feeds him. Then lets him sleep again, and feeds him again. Rest and food come before any conversation.

And the reason given is so gentle it is almost startling. Because the journey is too great for you. God is not saying you should be handling this better. He is saying, I know this is more than you can carry right now, so eat something and lie back down.

Sometimes the most spiritual thing available to you is sleep. Or a meal. Or a walk outside. Or a doctor's appointment you have been putting off. God cared for the body of his exhausted prophet before he addressed his heart, and he was not ashamed of him for a moment.

If you are under the tree today, you are in the company of prophets. And God is not standing over you with his arms crossed. He is asking whether you have eaten.

Talk About It Together

Be honest about the basics before you talk about the spiritual parts.

  1. How are you actually doing with sleep, food, and rest right now?
  2. Have you ever felt like your struggle disqualified you from being a person of faith?
  3. What is one physical, ordinary thing you could do this week to care for yourself?

Tonight’s Challenge

Do one ordinary thing your body needs tonight: an earlier bedtime, a real meal, or a walk outside. Treat it as obedience.

Prayer

Lord, thank You that when Your prophet was worn down to nothing, You fed him and let him sleep. Thank You for being tender with tired people. Care for our bodies as well as our hearts. Take the shame off us for needing rest and help. Amen.
