“In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.”
This is the verse people quote at anxious people, often badly. In nothing be anxious. Said the wrong way, it becomes a command to feel differently, which nobody has ever managed on demand, and it leaves the hearer feeling guilty on top of afraid.
Read the whole sentence and it turns into something else entirely. Paul does not say stop worrying. He says instead of carrying it, bring it. In everything, by prayer and petition, let your requests be made known to God.
It is not a command to feel calm. It is an instruction about where to put the thing.
And notice the word everything. Not the significant, presentable concerns. Everything. The small humiliating worries you would not say out loud. The ones that would sound ridiculous to anyone else. Paul leaves nothing off the list.
Then the promise, and it is oddly specific. Peace that surpasses understanding will guard your hearts and your thoughts. Guard is a military word, a garrison posted around a city. It is not that the peace explains anything or resolves your situation. It stands watch over the two places anxiety attacks: your heart and your thinking.
Peace that surpasses understanding also means peace that does not make sense given the circumstances. You may still not know how the thing will turn out. Something can settle anyway.
And if peace does not come today, you have not failed at this verse. Keep bringing it. That is the whole instruction.
Talk About It Together
Try praying the specifics out loud rather than summarizing them.
- What have you been carrying instead of bringing to God?
- Is there a worry that feels too small or too silly to pray about?
- Have you ever known peace that did not match your circumstances?
Tonight’s Challenge
Pray through your worry list item by item, out loud, with nothing left off as too small.
Prayer
Father, we bring it all to You, including the parts we are embarrassed to say. Thank You that we do not have to feel calm before we come. Post Your peace around our hearts and our thoughts, especially where the attack is heaviest. Amen.
