The Weight of Words

Proverbs 18:21

Death and life are in the power of the tongue; those who love it will eat its fruit.

World English Bible

There's an old saying that sticks and stones break bones but words never hurt. Anyone who has been married for more than a week knows that isn't true. Words are some of the heaviest things we hand each other.

Proverbs says the tongue holds the power of life and death. That sounds dramatic until you remember the sentences you can still quote from years ago, the ones that lifted you up, and the ones that cut deep. Your spouse can quote theirs too. We remember what was said to us by the people whose opinion matters most, and no one's opinion matters more than the person we married.

That's a heavy responsibility and a real gift. The same mouth that can wound can also heal. A word of encouragement from your spouse can carry them through a hard day at work. A word of contempt can sit on them for a week.

In the heat of a hard moment, it's tempting to reach for the sentence we know will land hardest, the one that wins. But winning an argument with a wound isn't winning. We have to live with the person we just cut.

Speaking life doesn't mean never being honest about hard things. It means handling honesty with care, because we know how much our words weigh.

Talk About It Together

Be gentle with each other in this one. It touches tender places. Take turns and don't get defensive.

  1. What is something I've said to you that encouraged you and stuck with you?
  2. Is there a word or phrase I use in arguments that hurts more than I realize?
  3. What do you most need to hear from me when you're discouraged?
  4. How can I tell you a hard truth in a way you can actually receive?
  5. What is a phrase we could start using to pause things before they get heated?

Tonight’s Challenge

Tonight, each of you say one sentence of genuine encouragement to the other about something they're facing right now. Speak life on purpose.

Prayer

Lord, our words carry more weight than we often realize. Guard our mouths, especially when we're angry or tired. Keep us from reaching for words that wound just to win. Teach us to speak life to each other, to encourage more than we criticize, and to handle even hard truths with tenderness. Let our home be a place of healing words. Amen.
