Day 8Marriage

You're Not a Mind Reader

Proverbs 18:13

He who gives answer before he hears, that is folly and shame to him.

World English Bible

A lot of marriage arguments are not between two people. They're between one person and their guess about the other person.

He walked in and didn't say much, so she decided he was mad at her. She was short on the phone, so he decided she doesn't care anymore. Neither guess was true. He was thinking about a problem at work. She was in the middle of something and distracted. But the guess got treated like a fact, and by dinner there's a cold quiet in the house that nobody can explain.

Proverbs calls answering before you hear both folly and shame. That's blunt, and it fits. When we assume, we answer a question our spouse never asked.

The other version of this is expecting your spouse to read your mind. We do it constantly. We decide that if they really loved us, they would know what we need without being told. Then we feel hurt when they don't. But that's a test nobody can pass, and it's not fair to grade someone on an exam you never handed them.

Asking is not weakness and it's not unromantic. "Are you upset with me, or is something else going on?" takes five seconds and can save three days of tension. "I need help this week, here's what would help most" is far kinder than waiting to see if they notice.

Assumptions grow in silence. Every time you check instead of guess, you take away the space where resentment builds.

When you don't know, ask. When you need something, say it. Nobody in this house is a mind reader, and nobody should have to be.

Talk About It Together

Answer honestly. Some of these may sting a little, and that's how you know they're worth asking.

  1. What is something you've assumed about me that turned out to be wrong?
  2. Is there something you've been expecting me to just know?
  3. When I'm quiet, what do you usually assume I'm thinking?
  4. What's a fair way for one of us to ask what the other is feeling without it starting a fight?
  5. Is there anything you're unsure about right now that you'd like to just ask me directly?

Tonight’s Challenge

Tonight, each of you name one thing you need this week and say it plainly instead of hoping it gets noticed.

Prayer

Father, keep us from answering before we hear. Save us from the fights we invent in our own heads. Give us the humility to ask instead of assume and the courage to say what we need out loud. Let honesty replace guessing in this marriage. Amen.
