“Joy comes to a man with the reply of his mouth. How good is a word at the right time!”
You can be completely right and still pick the worst possible moment.
The budget conversation at eleven at night. The concern about his mother in the car on the way to her house. The hard question thrown at someone who just walked in the door from a nine hour shift. The words might be fair. The timing guarantees it goes badly.
Proverbs says how good is a word at the right time. Not just a true word. A well timed one. Timing is part of the message, not separate from it.
Most of us don't think about timing because the urge to speak arrives with the feeling. We're upset now, so we want to talk now. But hard conversations need two people with something left in the tank. Late at night, mid conflict, hungry, or halfway out the door, neither of you is at your best, and the same sentence lands twice as hard.
This isn't permission to avoid things. "Now isn't good" turns into never if you let it. The move is to name the subject and set the time. "I want to talk about money. Can we do it Saturday morning after breakfast?" That's not dodging. That's respect for the conversation and for the person.
The person raising the subject should also be willing to wait a few hours. The person asking to wait should be the one who brings it back up. Both halves matter, or one of you starts to feel dismissed.
A hard conversation held at a good time can bring you closer. The same conversation at a bad time can cost you a week. Choose the hour on purpose.
Talk About It Together
This is a planning conversation as much as a heart one. Get practical.
- When are you at your worst for a serious conversation?
- When are you actually at your best for one?
- Has there been a time I brought something up at a bad moment? What happened?
- How can one of us ask to postpone a conversation without it feeling like a brush off?
- Is there a hard conversation we need to have soon? When should we have it?
Tonight’s Challenge
Agree on a regular time each week, even fifteen minutes, when you check in about how things are going. Put it on the calendar tonight.
Prayer
Lord, teach us wisdom about when to speak and when to wait. Keep us from unloading on each other at the worst possible moment, and keep us from using bad timing as an excuse to never talk at all. Give us words at the right time, and give us patience until then. Amen.
