“bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.”
Forgiveness is one of those words we use so often in church that it stops meaning anything. Then something real happens in our own house and we find out how heavy it actually is.
Let's be honest about what forgiveness is not. It isn't pretending it didn't happen. It isn't saying it didn't matter. It isn't a feeling that arrives one morning and makes the hurt stop. If we wait to feel like forgiving, most of us will wait forever.
Forgiveness is a decision. It's choosing to stop holding a debt over someone. You're giving up your right to make them pay for it, again and again, in small ways, for years.
That's why Paul ties it to what has already been done for us. Forgive even as Christ forgave you. He isn't asking us to invent a generosity we've never received. He's asking us to hand over what we've already been handed.
And it's usually not once. Big hurts have to be forgiven repeatedly, because the memory keeps coming back. Forgiving again isn't failure. It's the same decision, made again, until it finally sticks.
Forgiveness also isn't the same as trust. Forgiveness can be given today. Trust is rebuilt over time by consistent behavior. If something serious happened, you can release the debt and still need weeks or months before things feel steady. Both of those can be true at once, and confusing them causes a lot of unnecessary damage.
Carrying an offense is exhausting. It sits in the room with you at dinner. Putting it down is not weakness. It's the only way two imperfect people manage to stay together for decades.
Talk About It Together
Go slowly and stay tender. Don't use this as an opening to accuse.
- Is there something you need to forgive me for?
- Is there something you've forgiven that still hurts sometimes?
- What makes forgiveness hardest for you?
- Do you know that you're forgiven by me? Is there anything you're still unsure about?
- How can I help you feel safe enough to let something go?
Tonight’s Challenge
Each of you name one thing you're choosing to forgive tonight. Say it out loud, then pray together and leave it there.
Prayer
God, You have forgiven us more than we could ever list. Give us the strength to forgive each other, not once but as many times as it takes. Take the weight off us. Where trust needs rebuilding, give us patience for the work. Keep bitterness out of this home. Amen.
