Drop the Scorecard

1 Corinthians 13:4-5

Love is patient and is kind; love doesn't envy. Love doesn't brag, is not proud, doesn't behave itself inappropriately, doesn't seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil;

World English Bible

Somewhere in most marriages there's an invisible ledger.

Who got up with the kids more times this week. Who worked later. Who apologized last time. Who has given up more. We don't announce we're keeping score, and we'd probably deny it if asked. But we can produce the numbers instantly when we need them in an argument, which tells you the book was open the whole time.

Paul says love takes no account of evil. Some translations put it as keeps no record of wrongs. The picture is an accountant closing the ledger and putting it away.

Here's the trouble with the scorecard. You're always the one keeping it, so you're always winning. You know every single thing you've done, including the things nobody saw. You only know the part of your spouse's effort that happened in front of you. The math is rigged before you start, and both of you are quietly certain you're carrying more.

A scorecard also changes what your kindness means. If you give in order to be owed, you haven't given anything. You've made a loan. And your spouse can feel the difference, even if they couldn't explain it.

Dropping the scorecard doesn't mean ignoring a real imbalance. If one of you is genuinely drowning while the other coasts, that's a conversation to have, out loud and kindly. That's different from silently tallying points to use as ammunition later.

The question isn't did I do my half. The question is what does this marriage need from me right now. Marriages don't run at fifty fifty. Some seasons you carry more, some seasons they do. That's not unfair. That's the deal.

Talk About It Together

Answer honestly, even where it's unflattering. Nobody is on trial here.

  1. Do you catch yourself keeping score? About what?
  2. Where do you feel like you're carrying more right now?
  3. Is there something you do that you feel goes unnoticed?
  4. Is there an old wrong one of us keeps bringing back up? Can we retire it?
  5. What would help us feel like a team instead of two people tracking effort?

Tonight’s Challenge

Name one thing you've been quietly holding against your spouse. Say it once, out loud, and then agree together to close the book on it.

Prayer

Father, we keep records we were never meant to keep. Help us close the ledger. Take away our need to be owed and our habit of measuring who has given more. Teach us to give freely, the way You have given to us, without keeping count. Amen.
