Day 11Marriage

Fighting Fair

Proverbs 15:1

A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

World English Bible

Every married couple fights. The ones who say they never do are usually not telling the whole story, or one of them stopped speaking up a long time ago.

So the question isn't whether you'll disagree. It's how you disagree. Two people can have the exact same argument and end up in completely different places depending on how they fight.

Proverbs gives us the mechanism in one line. A gentle answer turns away wrath. A harsh word stirs up anger. Your volume and tone are not side details. They're the fuel. You can escalate or de-escalate a fight with the same information, just delivered differently.

Fighting fair has some plain rules. Stay on the actual subject. If the argument is about the schedule, don't drag in the thing from March. Don't use always and never, because they're almost never true and they turn a complaint into a verdict on someone's character. Don't threaten the marriage to win a point. Don't go for the tender spot you know about because you're the closest person to them. That last one is the real test, because you're the only person who knows exactly where it is.

And either of you can call a timeout. Not to storm off, but to cool down. "I need twenty minutes, and then let's finish this" is a legitimate move, as long as you actually come back.

Here's the goal, and it's worth saying plainly: you're not trying to win. You live with the person you defeat. A win that leaves your spouse humiliated is a loss for the household.

Talk About It Together

Talk about this while things are calm. Rules are easy to agree on now and hard to make up mid fight.

  1. What do I do in an argument that makes it worse?
  2. What do I do that helps us get back on track?
  3. Is there a low blow either of us reaches for that we should retire for good?
  4. What are two or three rules we both agree to follow when we fight?
  5. How do we know when we're done, and what does making up look like for you?

Tonight’s Challenge

Write down three rules for fighting fair that you both agree to. Keep them somewhere you'll see them. Agree on a word either of you can say to call a timeout.

Prayer

Lord, we're going to disagree. Help us do it without damaging each other. Guard our tone when we're angry and hold back the words we'd regret. Remind us mid argument that we're on the same side. Let every fight in this house end closer than it started. Amen.
