“Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”
There's a particular kind of loneliness that happens inside a marriage. Two people in the same house, each carrying something heavy, each certain the other one has enough on their plate already.
So he doesn't mention the thing at work. She doesn't mention how afraid she's been about her mom. Both of them are protecting the other, and both of them end up alone.
Paul says bear one another's burdens. Not admire each other's strength from a distance. Get under the weight with them. That's what he calls fulfilling the law of Christ, which is a striking thing to say about something as ordinary as helping someone carry a load.
Sharing a burden doesn't always mean solving it. Most burdens can't be solved by a spouse. Your husband can't cure the illness. Your wife can't undo the layoff. But the weight of a thing changes when someone else knows about it. Carrying something alone is heavier than carrying it with a witness, even when the load itself doesn't move an ounce.
This takes two skills, and most of us are better at one than the other. The first is telling someone. Saying I'm struggling, out loud, without minimizing it into nothing. The second is receiving it well. Not panicking, not fixing immediately, not making their burden about your feelings. Just being there and staying steady.
And if you're the one who never asks for help, hear this. Letting your spouse carry something with you isn't a burden to them. It's an honor. It's the whole point. Being needed by the person you love is not a weight. It's belonging.
Talk About It Together
Take turns. Don't jump straight into solving what you hear.
- What is the heaviest thing you're carrying right now?
- Have you been protecting me from something you thought would worry me?
- When you're struggling, what actually helps? What doesn't?
- Is there a load in our life that we could split differently?
- Do you feel like you can come to me with anything? If not, what's in the way?
Tonight’s Challenge
Each of you name the heaviest thing you're carrying right now. Then pray for each other out loud, by name, about that exact thing.
Prayer
Father, we get tired and we try to carry things alone. Help us tell each other the truth about what's heavy. Teach us to get under the weight together instead of standing beside it. Thank You that You carry what neither of us can. Amen.
