Enough

1 Timothy 6:6-8

But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we certainly can't carry anything out. But having food and clothing, we will be content with that.

World English Bible

Discontent is patient. It rarely announces itself. It just sits quietly in the background, comparing.

The house you're in against the house you drove past. Your marriage against the one on your feed, which is a highlight reel and you know it, and it still works on you. The season you're in against the season you assumed you'd be in by now.

Paul says godliness with contentment is great gain. He's writing to people with far less than we have, and he calls contentment gain. Not settling. Gain. Something you get, not something you give up.

Comparison is especially corrosive in a marriage because it always ends with a comparison of your spouse. Another husband is more driven. Another wife is more relaxed about things. Nobody thinks it in those words, but the feeling gets there anyway. And here's what makes it unfair: you're comparing the whole unedited truth about your marriage against the two minutes of someone else's that they chose to show you.

Contentment isn't pretending you have no wants and no ambition. You can want a bigger house, a different job, another child. Contentment is refusing to let what you don't have poison what you do.

There's a good test for this. Can you name three things about your life right now that you would have desperately wanted five years ago? Most of us can, and most of us have stopped seeing them. The thing you prayed for is now the thing you walk past without noticing.

Enough is not a number. It's a decision about where you point your eyes.

Talk About It Together

Answer honestly, including the parts that are uncomfortable to admit out loud.

  1. What do you find yourself comparing our life to?
  2. What in our life right now would you have been thrilled about five years ago?
  3. Is there something you're waiting on that's making it hard to enjoy today?
  4. Do you ever feel compared to someone else by me?
  5. What is enough for us? Have we ever actually decided?

Tonight’s Challenge

Each of you name three things about your life together right now that you're genuinely thankful for. Be specific. Then agree on one comparison you'll stop feeding, whether that's an app, a habit, or a conversation.

Prayer

Father, teach us to be content. Take our eyes off what everyone else has and put them back on what You've given us. Keep comparison out of this marriage. Help us see the answered prayers we walk past every day and to say thank you for them. Amen.
