“Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother, and will join with his wife, and they will be one flesh.”
It's easy to skip past the first word. Leave.
Before joining, there's leaving. Not abandoning your parents, and not loving them less. It means the center of gravity moves. There's a new household now, and it makes its own decisions.
That shift is where a lot of couples struggle, and it's rarely because anyone is a villain. Your mother means well. Your father has always given advice and doesn't know how to stop. Someone's family always does the holidays a certain way and nobody thought to ask if that still works. Old loyalties are strong, and they're mostly invisible until they collide with a spouse who grew up with different ones.
The damage usually comes from one particular pattern: one spouse feeling like they lost an argument to their in-laws, or worse, that their husband or wife didn't stand with them. That one goes deep and it lasts.
So two practical commitments. First, decide together before you answer. Not on the phone in the moment, not alone in the driveway. Together, then answer as one household. Second, whoever's family it is takes the lead on the hard conversation with them. Your parents should hear it from you, not from your spouse.
And guard how you speak about each other's families. You may be able to complain about your own mother and forgive it in an hour. Your spouse joining in on that complaint lands very differently.
Honoring your parents and choosing your spouse first are not in conflict. One of the ways you honor the family you came from is by building a strong one of your own.
Talk About It Together
Stay calm, especially when your own family comes up. Nobody's parents are on trial here.
- Have you ever felt like I chose my family over you?
- Is there a family expectation that's putting pressure on us right now?
- How do we want to handle holidays and visits this year?
- How should we handle it when one of our families offers advice we didn't ask for?
- What's something good you learned from my family?
Tonight’s Challenge
Agree on one thing you'll decide together as a household before answering anyone else, and name who will make the call if it comes up this month.
Prayer
God, thank You for the families we came from. Help us honor them without letting anything come between us. Make us one household that decides together and stands together. Give us wisdom in hard conversations and grace toward the people who raised us. Amen.
