Day 29Marriage

Who Is Building the House

Psalm 127:1

Unless Yahweh builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless Yahweh watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.

World English Bible

You can do everything in this devotional and still be running on your own strength.

Communicate better. Fight fairer. Be kinder. Serve together. All of it is good, and all of it is exhausting if the two of you are the only ones holding this up. There are days when you don't have the patience, don't feel the love, and can't summon the will to be generous. Every marriage arrives there eventually.

The psalm is blunt about it. Unless God builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Not that the work doesn't matter. It's that the work alone isn't enough, and pretending otherwise is how people end up worn out and quietly bitter about a marriage they've been carrying by themselves.

Keeping God at the center of a marriage sounds abstract until you make it ordinary. It looks like praying together, even briefly, even awkwardly. Most couples don't, and most who start say it changed something they can't quite explain. It's hard to stay hard toward someone you just prayed with.

It looks like being in something together, a church, a study, a habit of reading. It looks like asking what God wants in a decision instead of just what you each want. It looks like forgiving because you've been forgiven, not because your spouse earned it.

And it looks like admitting you're not enough. Not as a failure, but as a fact. You will not be a perfect spouse. Neither will they. A marriage built on two people being sufficient for each other is a heavy thing to ask of a human being.

Let God carry what neither of you can. Then get up tomorrow and do the ordinary work again.

Talk About It Together

Be honest about where you actually are, not where you think you should be.

  1. What does faith look like in our house right now, honestly?
  2. Have we ever prayed together regularly? What got in the way?
  3. Where do you feel like we're running on our own strength?
  4. What is one spiritual habit you'd like us to have as a couple?
  5. How can I support you in your own faith?

Tonight’s Challenge

Pray together out loud tonight, even if it's two sentences each and feels awkward. Then decide on one small habit you'll try together this month.

Prayer

Lord, we've been trying to build this on our own strength and we're tired. Build this house. Be the center of it and not an afterthought. Teach us to pray together, forgive like You forgive, and depend on You when we run out. Watch over us, because we can't guard this alone. Amen.
