Daniel so distinguished himself among the officials of the Persian empire that King Darius planned to set him over the whole kingdom. Jealous rivals, unable to find any fault in him, schemed to trap him through his devotion to God. They persuaded Darius to sign an irrevocable decree that for thirty days anyone who prayed to any god or man other than the king would be thrown into the lions' den. When Daniel learned of the decree, he went home and, as was his custom, prayed toward Jerusalem three times a day at his open window. His enemies caught him praying and reported him. Darius, distressed to realize he had been manipulated into condemning Daniel, tried to save him but was bound by his own law. Daniel was thrown into the lions' den, and the king spent a sleepless night fasting. At dawn Darius hurried to the den and called out. Daniel answered that his God had sent an angel to shut the lions' mouths, because he was found innocent. Overjoyed, the king had Daniel lifted out unharmed, punished the accusers, and decreed that people should reverence the living God of Daniel.
