Story Summary

King Belshazzar held a great feast for a thousand of his nobles. While drinking, he ordered the gold and silver vessels taken from the temple in Jerusalem to be brought so that he and his guests could drink from them while praising their idols. At that moment, the fingers of a human hand appeared and wrote on the plaster of the wall. The king turned pale with terror, and none of his wise men could read or interpret the writing. The queen remembered Daniel, who had interpreted dreams in the past, and he was summoned. Daniel refused the king's rewards and boldly recounted how Belshazzar's predecessor had been humbled for his pride, yet Belshazzar had not humbled himself and had defiled the sacred vessels while praising lifeless idols. Daniel then interpreted the writing: God had numbered the days of the kingdom and brought it to an end; the king had been weighed on the scales and found wanting; and his kingdom would be divided and given to the Medes and Persians. That very night Belshazzar was killed, and the Persian king took over the kingdom.
