Story Summary

Jacob left Beersheba and journeyed toward Haran. Coming to a certain place at sunset, he took a stone for a pillow and lay down to sleep. He dreamed of a stairway set on the earth with its top reaching to heaven, and angels of God were ascending and descending on it. The LORD stood above it and spoke, identifying Himself as the God of Abraham and Isaac. God promised to give Jacob and his descendants the land on which he lay, to make his offspring like the dust of the earth, spreading in every direction, and to bless all peoples through him. God pledged to be with Jacob, to keep him wherever he went, and to bring him back to this land, promising not to leave him until He had done what He had spoken. Jacob awoke and said that surely the LORD was in this place and he had not known it. Filled with awe, he called it the house of God and the gate of heaven. He set up the stone as a pillar, named the place Bethel, and vowed that if God kept him, the LORD would be his God.
