Story Summary

Rebekah bore twins, Esau and Jacob, who struggled even before birth, and God told her the older would serve the younger. Esau became a hunter, Jacob a quiet man. One day Esau came in famished and sold his birthright to Jacob for bread and lentil stew, despising his birthright. Years later, when Isaac was old and blind and wished to bless Esau, Rebekah helped Jacob disguise himself as his hairy brother with goatskins and Esau's clothing. Jacob brought Isaac food, claimed to be Esau, and received the blessing of prosperity and rule over his brothers. When Esau returned and discovered the deception, he cried out bitterly, and Isaac could not reverse the blessing. Esau vowed to kill Jacob once their father died. Rebekah, learning of the threat, urged Jacob to flee to her brother Laban in Haran until Esau's anger cooled. So Jacob left home, and Isaac sent him off with the covenant blessing of Abraham.

What This Story Means

This story is honest about human sin and yet shows God's purposes advancing through it. Jacob's grasping and Rebekah's scheming are not held up as models; the deception fractures the family and drives Jacob into years of exile. At the same time, God had said the older would serve the younger, and His covenant purposes continue through Jacob despite the family's failures. The account teaches that God can accomplish His will even through flawed and sinful people, without approving of their sin. It also shows that deception carries real consequences, setting up the long, hard road by which God will later reshape Jacob's character.
