Story Summary

After these things God tested Abraham, calling him to take his son Isaac, whom he loved, to the region of Moriah and offer him as a burnt offering on a mountain God would show him. Early the next morning Abraham set out with Isaac, two servants, wood, and fire. On the third day he saw the place, left the servants, and went on with Isaac, who carried the wood. Isaac asked where the lamb was, and Abraham answered that God would provide the lamb. At the place, Abraham built an altar, bound Isaac, and laid him on it. As he took the knife to slay his son, the angel of the LORD called from heaven, telling him not to harm the boy, for now it was clear that he feared God, having not withheld his only son. Abraham looked and saw a ram caught in a thicket and offered it instead of his son. He named the place The LORD Will Provide. The angel called again, and because Abraham had obeyed, God swore to bless him, to multiply his offspring like the stars and sand, and to bless all nations through his offspring.
