Story Summary

When the day of Pentecost came, the believers were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like a rushing violent wind filled the house, and what seemed to be tongues of fire rested on each of them. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages as the Spirit enabled them. A crowd of devout Jews from many nations had gathered in Jerusalem for the festival, and they were bewildered to hear these Galileans declaring the wonders of God in their own native languages. Some were amazed, while others mocked, saying the believers were drunk. Peter stood up with the eleven and addressed the crowd, explaining that this was the fulfillment of the prophet Joel's promise that God would pour out His Spirit. He proclaimed that Jesus, crucified and risen, was both Lord and Christ, and called the people to repent and be baptized for the forgiveness of sins, promising they too would receive the Holy Spirit. Cut to the heart, about three thousand people accepted his message and were baptized that day. They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching, to fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer, and the church was born and grew, as God added to their number daily.
