Story Summary

After His resurrection, Jesus appeared to His disciples over forty days, giving many convincing proofs that He was alive and speaking about the kingdom of God. On one occasion He told them not to leave Jerusalem but to wait for the gift the Father had promised, the baptism of the Holy Spirit, which they would receive in a few days. When they asked whether He would now restore the kingdom to Israel, Jesus told them it was not for them to know the times the Father had set, but that they would receive power when the Holy Spirit came upon them, and would be His witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. After saying this, He was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid Him from their sight. As they were looking intently into the sky, two men dressed in white suddenly stood beside them and asked why they stood looking into the sky. They announced that this same Jesus, who had been taken from them into heaven, would come back in the same way they had seen Him go. The disciples returned to Jerusalem to wait, as Jesus had instructed, for the coming of the Spirit.
