In the days of the judges, a famine drove a man of Bethlehem, his wife Naomi, and their two sons to Moab. There the sons married Moabite women, Orpah and Ruth, but in time the husband and both sons died, leaving three widows. When Naomi decided to return to Bethlehem, she urged her daughters-in-law to stay in Moab. Orpah returned home, but Ruth clung to Naomi and vowed to go wherever she went, to make Naomi's people her people and Naomi's God her God. In Bethlehem, Ruth gleaned grain in a field belonging to Boaz, a relative of Naomi's late husband, who showed her kindness and protection. Naomi recognized Boaz as a kinsman-redeemer, one who could restore the family. At Naomi's guidance, Ruth approached Boaz, who honored the customs of redemption, settled the matter publicly at the town gate, and married her. Ruth bore a son, Obed, who brought new joy to Naomi. Obed became the father of Jesse, the father of David, placing Ruth in the ancestry of Israel's greatest king.
