Story Summary

The boy Samuel served the LORD under Eli, at a time when messages from God were rare and visions uncommon. One night, as Samuel lay down in the temple where the ark of God was, the LORD called his name. Samuel, thinking it was Eli, ran to him, but Eli said he had not called and sent him back. This happened a second and third time. Then Eli understood that the LORD was calling the boy, and he instructed Samuel that if the voice called again, he should answer that he was listening, for the LORD's servant was ready to hear. The LORD came and called again, and Samuel responded as Eli had said. God then gave Samuel a solemn message of judgment against Eli's household because of his sons' sins. In the morning Samuel was afraid to tell Eli the vision, but Eli insisted, and Samuel told him everything. As Samuel grew, the LORD was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground, and all Israel came to recognize that Samuel was established as a prophet of the LORD.
