In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, to a virgin named Mary, who was engaged to a man named Joseph of the house of David. Gabriel greeted her as one highly favored, and Mary was troubled by the greeting. The angel told her not to be afraid, for she had found favor with God. He announced that she would conceive and give birth to a son, whom she was to name Jesus. This child would be great, called the Son of the Most High, and God would give Him the throne of David, and His kingdom would never end. Mary asked how this could be, since she was a virgin. Gabriel explained that the Holy Spirit would come upon her and the power of the Most High would overshadow her, so the holy child would be called the Son of God. As a sign, he told her that her relative Elizabeth, once thought barren, was also expecting a son in her old age, for nothing would be impossible with God. Mary responded in humble faith, calling herself the Lord's servant and asking that it be done to her according to God's word. Then the angel left her.
