Story Summary

In those days Caesar Augustus decreed a census of the entire Roman world, requiring everyone to register in their own town. So Joseph went from Nazareth in Galilee to Bethlehem in Judea, the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David, taking with him Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and Mary gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped Him in cloths and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. Matthew's account adds that before this, Joseph, learning Mary was pregnant, had resolved to divorce her quietly, but an angel told him in a dream that the child was conceived by the Holy Spirit and would save His people from their sins, fulfilling the prophecy of Immanuel, God with us. Joseph obeyed, took Mary as his wife, and named the child Jesus. So the Son of God entered the world in humble circumstances, in a small town, laid in a feeding trough, the Savior of the world born in poverty and obscurity.
