That night, shepherds were living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks. Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. The angel told them not to be afraid, for he brought good news of great joy that would be for all people: that day, in the town of David, a Savior had been born, who is Christ the Lord. As a sign, they would find the baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger. Then a great company of the heavenly host appeared, praising God and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to those on whom His favor rests. When the angels had left, the shepherds decided to go to Bethlehem to see this thing that had happened. They hurried off and found Mary and Joseph and the baby lying in the manger, just as they had been told. They spread the word about what they had heard concerning this child, and all who heard were amazed. Mary treasured all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen.
