Story Summary

Jesus was led out to a place called Golgotha, the place of the skull, carrying His cross until Simon of Cyrene was compelled to carry it. There He was crucified between two criminals. Even as He was nailed to the cross, Jesus prayed, Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. Soldiers cast lots for His clothing, and onlookers and leaders mocked Him, challenging Him to save Himself. One of the criminals hurled insults, but the other rebuked him, acknowledged his own guilt and Jesus' innocence, and asked Jesus to remember him; Jesus promised that he would be with Him in paradise that very day. Jesus saw His mother and the disciple John nearby and entrusted them to each other's care. Darkness came over the land for about three hours. Near the end, Jesus cried out, and in John's account declared, It is finished, signaling the completion of His mission. Then He committed His spirit to the Father and died. The temple curtain was torn in two, and the centurion, seeing how Jesus died, declared Him righteous, or the Son of God. His death, understood as a sacrifice for sin, is the center of the Christian gospel.
