Story Summary

After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb where Jesus had been buried. Suddenly there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, rolled back the stone, and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning and his clothing white as snow. The guards trembled in fear and became like dead men. The angel spoke to the women, telling them not to be afraid, for he knew they were seeking Jesus who had been crucified. He announced that Jesus was not there, for He had risen, just as He had said, and invited them to see the empty place where He had lain. The angel sent them to tell the disciples that Jesus had risen and was going ahead of them into Galilee. The women left quickly, filled with fear and great joy, and ran to bring word to the disciples. On the way, Jesus Himself met them, greeting them. They came, took hold of His feet, and worshiped Him. Jesus told them not to be afraid, and to tell His brothers to go to Galilee, where they would see Him.
