On the day Jesus rose, two of His followers were walking to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, talking about everything that had happened. As they discussed the crucifixion and the puzzling reports of the empty tomb, Jesus Himself came near and walked with them, but they were kept from recognizing Him. He asked what they were discussing, and they expressed their sadness and dashed hopes, having believed Jesus would redeem Israel, and their confusion at the women's report that He was alive. Jesus gently called them slow to believe the prophets, and beginning with Moses and all the Scriptures, He explained how the Messiah had to suffer and then enter His glory. As they approached the village, He appeared to be going farther, but they urged Him to stay, since evening was near. At the table, He took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to them, and at that moment their eyes were opened and they recognized Him, and He disappeared from their sight. They said to each other that their hearts had burned within them as He opened the Scriptures. At once they returned to Jerusalem to tell the others that the Lord had truly risen.
