Once more, Jesus said, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish. When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away. This is how it will be at the end of the age, he explained. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw the wicked into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Like the parable of the weeds, this parable teaches that the kingdom gathers a mixed catch now, but a final and thorough separation is certain.

What This Story Means

Spoken to men who knew the sea, this parable pictures the kingdom as a dragnet that sweeps up everything in its path. In this age the net gathers a mixed catch, good and bad together, just as the field held both wheat and weeds. But the gathering is not the end. When the net is full, there is a sorting, and it is final. Jesus teaches that the present mingling of the true and the false is temporary, and that a day of separation is coming when the righteous and the wicked will be divided by God's angels. Like its companion parable of the weeds, it warns against presuming on our place in the net and calls every hearer to be found among the good when the sorting comes.
