“"Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."”
Notice who is invited. All you who labor and are heavily burdened. There is no other qualification. Not the strong, not the ones handling it well, not the people whose faith is holding steady. The tired ones.
A yoke was a wooden frame that joined two animals so they could pull together. A younger animal was often paired with an older, steadier one that carried the real weight and set the pace. That is the picture Jesus reaches for. Not a load removed, but a load shared with someone who will not be pulled off course by it.
And he tells us what he is like in the harness beside us: gentle and humble in heart. If you have ever worked alongside someone impatient, you know what a difference that makes.
Here is where anxiety gets heavy. So much of what we carry was never assigned to us. Outcomes we cannot control. Other people's choices. Tomorrow, which has not happened yet. Being responsible for how everyone in the house feels. That weight is crushing precisely because it is not ours to lift.
Coming to him is not a single dramatic moment of surrender. It tends to be a daily handing over, sometimes an hourly one. You give it, you find it back in your hands an hour later, you give it again. That is not failure. That is how it works.
What are you carrying today that was never yours? Name it, and hand that one to him first.
Talk About It Together
Get specific. Vague burdens are hard to hand over.
- What are you carrying that was never actually yours to carry?
- What would it look like to hand that to Jesus today?
- Where do you need to let someone pull alongside you?
Tonight’s Challenge
Name one thing out loud that is not yours to control, and say plainly that you are giving it to God.
Prayer
Jesus, You invited the tired ones, and that is us. We have been carrying things that were never ours. Take them. Thank You that You are gentle and humble in heart, and that You pull alongside us. Give rest to our souls. Amen.
