Day 7Anxiety & Peace

He Knows How You're Made

Psalm 103:13-14

Like a father has compassion on his children, so Yahweh has compassion on those who fear him. For he knows how we are made. He remembers that we are dust.

World English Bible

One week in, this is a good place to rest for a moment.

He knows how we are made. He remembers that we are dust.

Think about what that removes. God is not holding you to a standard he thinks you should be able to meet on your own strength. He is not surprised when you get tired, or frightened, or overwhelmed. He knows exactly what we are, because he is the one who made us out of the ground and breathed into it.

We forget this about ourselves constantly. We expect to run indefinitely without rest, to absorb bad news without being shaken, to handle a hard season without it costing anything. Then we treat our own limits as evidence that something is wrong with us.

God does not read your limits that way. The verse pairs his knowledge of our frailty with compassion, like a father with a small child. A good father does not resent a four-year-old for being four. He accounts for it. He slows down. He carries them the last stretch.

So be as patient with yourself this week as God already is with you. If you are worn thin, that is information about your capacity, not a verdict on your worth or your faith.

And notice: dust is not an insult here. It is the reason for his tenderness. He is compassionate precisely because he knows what we are made of.

Talk About It Together

Be kind to yourself in this one. Answer the way you would answer about a friend.

  1. Where are you holding yourself to a standard God is not holding you to?
  2. What does it do to you to hear that God remembers you are dust?
  3. What is one way you could be gentler with yourself this week?

Tonight’s Challenge

Say one kind, true thing about yourself out loud, the kind of thing you would say to a friend who was struggling.

Prayer

Father, You know how we are made and You are compassionate about it. Thank You that our limits do not disappoint You. Teach us to be as patient with ourselves as You are with us. Carry us the last stretch when we cannot walk it. Amen.
