Day 8Anxiety & Peace

God With Us, Right Now

Isaiah 41:10

Don't you be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

World English Bible

Do not be afraid appears throughout Scripture, and it is worth noticing that it is almost never said to calm people. It is said to people who are already afraid, usually with good reason.

So read this verse carefully, because it does not stop at the command. Every instruction comes attached to a reason, and the reason is always him.

Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. Then three promises stacked one on the next. I will strengthen you. I will help you. I will uphold you.

That last one is the picture worth keeping. Upheld with a right hand. Not sent off with encouragement and a plan, but held. The way you hold a child on a steep path, not because they are doing badly, but because you are not going to let them fall.

Anxiety usually runs on a hidden assumption: that when the thing you dread arrives, you will be standing there alone with only your own resources. That is what makes the future feel unbearable. Not the event, the imagined aloneness in it.

This verse takes that assumption apart. Whatever tomorrow holds, the one thing that will not be true is that you face it by yourself.

You may not feel his presence today. Feelings are honest but they are not always accurate, and this promise does not depend on your ability to sense it. He is with you either way.

Talk About It Together

Answer honestly, even if you cannot feel any of this right now.

  1. What are you afraid of facing alone?
  2. Which do you need more today: strength, help, or to be held up?
  3. What would change if you knew for certain God was with you in that specific situation?

Tonight’s Challenge

Name the thing you dread most, then say out loud: I will not face that alone.

Prayer

God, You do not tell us to stop being afraid and leave us there. You say You are with us. Strengthen us, help us, and hold us up today. Where we cannot feel You, help us trust that You are here anyway. Amen.
