“Yahweh is my shepherd: I shall lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He guides me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
He makes me lie down. That is a strange verb for a psalm about comfort, and it is worth noticing.
Sheep do not lie down when they are anxious. A shepherd who wants a resting flock has to deal with what is keeping them on their feet, the predators, the pests, the friction in the herd. Rest is something the shepherd creates conditions for. Sometimes his care looks like making you stop.
If you have been running on adrenaline for months, part of what God does for you may feel less like inspiration and more like being made to lie down. That is not punishment. That is a shepherd doing his job.
Then the valley, and one small word that carries the whole psalm. Through. He does not promise a route around it. He promises company inside it, and an exit.
And notice the pronoun shift. The first verses talk about God. He leads, he restores. In the valley it becomes you. You are with me. In the darkest stretch the psalm stops describing God from a distance and starts speaking to him directly. That is often how it happens. Proximity increases in the valley, not before it.
The rod and staff were tools, not decorations. One for driving off what threatened the flock, one for guiding and pulling a stuck sheep out of a crevice. Comfort here is not a feeling. It is a shepherd with equipment, near enough to use it.
You are being led through. Not abandoned in the middle.

Prayer
Shepherd, make us lie down. We have been on our feet too long. Restore our souls. Thank You that You lead us through the valley rather than around it, and that You are closest in the dark places. Your rod and staff comfort us. Amen.
