Day 27Marriage

Facing Outward

Matthew 5:16

Even so, let your light shine before men; that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

World English Bible

A marriage that only ever looks at itself gets small.

There's a stage where all the attention has to go inward. When you're working on something painful, or in a season of survival, you don't have anything left over. That's fine, and it's temporary. But a marriage that stays turned inward permanently starts to run out of air.

Jesus says let your light shine so people see your good works and glorify God. That's not about being impressive. It's about being useful in a way that points past you. And here's the part couples often miss: two people serving together are visible in a way that one person isn't. People notice a household that has room in it for other people.

This doesn't require anything dramatic. Have people over, even when the house isn't clean. Take a meal to the family with the new baby or the funeral last week. Watch someone's kids so they can have an evening. Take on something at church as a pair rather than separately. Be the couple that shows up when someone's moving.

Something happens in a marriage when you work on something together that isn't about you. You see each other differently. You watch your spouse be kind to a stranger and you remember why you liked them. Shared purpose does something for a couple that no amount of talking about the relationship can.

A marriage was never meant to be a closed circle of two. It's a place where people are cared for, and some of those people should be outside it.

Talk About It Together

Dream a little here, then land on something you'd actually do.

  1. When have we served or helped someone together? What was that like?
  2. Who around us is going through something hard right now?
  3. What are we each good at that could be useful to someone?
  4. Is our marriage turned inward right now? Is that the season, or a habit?
  5. What is one thing we could do together for someone else this month?

Tonight’s Challenge

Pick one person or family and do something concrete for them this week. A meal, an errand, an evening of childcare, a phone call. Decide tonight who and what.

Prayer

Father, don't let our marriage turn in on itself. Give us eyes for the people around us and something useful to do together. Let this home be a place where others are cared for. Use us as a pair, and let whatever good comes of it point back to You. Amen.
